TheLonging

There is a longing in every human heart for connection.

This is by design.

We have a natural urge, an unrelenting desire to be known, to be loved, and to be in community. Alone, our hearts remain unsatisfied.

This longing can be filled temporarily with many things: human relationships, status and professional success, parenthood, or friendships. Name “your thing,” this list could go on forever.

But every single connection this world can offer, whether healthy or not, will fail to reach the deepest part of our soul.

There is only One who will satisfy our deepest longings.

If we are not filled with the Spirit of GOD, our Creator and life-giver, then there is not just one “God-sized hole” that needs filling, our entire souls are left gaping open, crying out for that something more it craves.

I have heard some people refer to it lightly as your "God sized hole." But it is so much more than that. If we are not filled with the Spirit of GOD, our Creator and life-giver, then there is not just one "God-sized hole" that needs filling; our entire souls are left gaping open, crying out for that something more it craves.

Have you ever felt this? You can be in a crowded room, yet feel lonely and unknown? You may have a full calendar yet you feel unfulfilled? You can receive the world's accolades a hundred times over, or you may even have the best human relationships in the world, yet in the quiet corners of your heart you are haunted by the knowledge that something is missing.

What I have just described is a life out of communion with God.

Our souls will find rest in God alone.

Without Him, we cannot be fully satisfied, no matter how skilled we have become at masking it. Yet no masks and no alternative can permanently sustain us or fill the longing in our hearts.

We can possess all this world has to offer, but if we have not communion with God, who is LOVE, we have nothing. In the same right, we can have nothing of earthly possessions, but when we have constant communion with God, we have all we need.

We can possess all this world has to offer, but if we have not communion with God, who is LOVE, we have nothing. In the same right, we can have nothing of earthly possessions, but when we have constant communion with God, we have all we need.

For God has given us a way to return to our heart's true home, and that is through His Son, Jesus, who is alive today, whose Spirit fills the earth, and who stands at the door of your heart, and knocks. He wants to be let into your heart and He longs to abide with you.

The Psalmist David describes this soul-longing so well in the following scriptures…

Psalms 42:1
As the deer longs for streams of water,
so I long for you, O God.

Psalm 84:2
My soul longed and even yearned for the courts of the LORD;
My heart and my flesh sing for joy to the living God.

Psalm 119:20
My soul is crushed with longing after Your ordinances at all times.

Psalm 119:131
I opened my mouth wide and panted, for I longed for Your commandments.

Even after one has answered the pursuing of God, and embraces Christ our Savior, the soul still continually aches for communion.

The longing does not stop, even after we have tapped the source of fulfillment.

The more we seek Him, the more we find Him, and still, the more we crave Him.

A.W. Tozer writes in his book, The Pursuit of God, “To have found God and still to pursue Him is the soul’s paradox of love, scorned indeed by the too-easily satisfied religionist, but justified in happy experience by the children of the burning heart.

Why do we have this longing? Why are we, as created ones, stricken with such an invasive longing that continues our whole lives?

It is because we have been created by a God who desires relationship with us

The love of Christ is beyond knowledge. We’ve got to let go of our impoverished, circumcised, traditionalist, legalistic, human perceptions of God and open ourselves to the God in Jesus Christ. If we will, the promise is that we will be filled up with the fullness of God.” –Brennan Manning, The Furious Longing of God.

God is not after your religious works or good deeds. He is pursuing your heart. He will stop at nothing to show you His love.

God is not satisfied with your religion, and neither should you be. Do not be so easily satisfied with counterfeit sources of connection, but embrace the one connection your soul cannot live without.
