There is so much in life we can’t explain. So much we just don’t understand. Social media is an ever present reminder that a lot of people are going through a lot of stuff. Sometimes I get so frustrated with all the pain, suffering, and need in the world that I just want to throw the covers over my head and hide because it can be so haunting.

It’s in these desperate moments when we can either become cynical or we can press into the fact that we have a good God. Being cynical doesn’t help. I have tried it. The only thing I have found to bring hope into this weary world is praise. It defies reason and logic and certainly does not come naturally, but then faith has never been about any of these things. When we praise God in faith, despite the absence of answers, it invites Him to meet us right where we are in a way only He can.

I adore the lyrics to this song. It captures these moments so perfectly. It can be hard to find words when your heart is hurting and this song delivers them so beautifully.

Even When it Hurts
by Joel Houston for Hillsong United

Take this fainted heart

Take these tainted hands

Wash me in your love

Come like grace again

Even when my strength is lost

I'll praise you

Even when I have no song

I'll praise you

Even when it's hard to find the words

Louder then I'll sing your praise

I will only sing your praise

Take this mountain weight

Take these ocean tears

Hold me through the trial

Come like hope again

Even when the fight seems lost

I'll praise you

Even when it hurts like hell

I'll praise you

Even when it makes no sense to sing

Louder then I'll sing your praise

I will only sing your praise

I will only sing your praise

I will only sing your praise

I will only sing your praise

And my heart burns only for you

You are all you are all I want

And my soul waits only for you

And I

If you find yourself wrestling with whether to trust or turn away, I encourage you to praise Him. To just press in and say, “I choose You, God, over my understanding because You are worthy regardless of my feelings.” I promise He will not leave you there because He is always faithful. He will lift your countenance bringing peace and comfort to your heart. Just praise.

If you find yourself wrestling with whether to trust or turn away, I encourage you to praise Him.
