This was the first time I fully understood what it meant to be loved by Jesus and knew that I was saved by His grace alone and nothing I did would take that away.

I will never forget my first real encounter with Jesus. I was in middle school at a “Focus” weekend. It was during worship, I don’t remember the song we were singing, but I’ll never forget the image of Jesus on the cross and the tears streaming down my face as I stood there worshipping the one who died for me. This was the first time I fully understood what it meant to be loved by Jesus and knew that I was saved by His grace alone and nothing I did would take that away. Though I was baptized several years earlier, and would stray from him years later in teenage/young adult rebellion, I still think of that being the moment I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit for the first time.

My love of worship was birthed in that moment as well; the feeling of peace that comes over you when the Holy Spirit enters the room. The realization of what our Savior did for us, when words like, “I can’t believe the price you paid for me, what you did not owe, so that I could know you” are sung. The praise and focus we put on Him during those moments is so necessary in our walk with Him. When we fix our eyes on our Savior in worship, all else fades away. Our priorities shift and we remember why we are here on this earth and we can refocus on the love of Jesus.

I really love the song “I Can’t Believe” by Elevation Worship from their “Here As In Heaven” album. This song truly speaks about the immense price our Savior paid for us and how we do not deserve that ultimate sacrifice. How Jesus took our sins, our burdens, and our shame so that we may live. Every time I hear this song, I am reminded of this sacrifice and brought back to the place where I was when I met Jesus for the first time.

I encourage you to listen to this song and remember how much our Lord loves you. Remember the great price Jesus paid for you, remember how faithful He is and how no mistake in your past, present or future will ever take away the love He has for you.

1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations Psalms 100:1-4 (NIV).

35 Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? 36 (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.”) 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord Romans 8:35-39 (NLT).

I CAN’T BELIEVE

By Elevation Worship

VERSE 1

In the fall you were there

Grace began before I was aware

A shame too great for me to hide

Covered now because of Jesus Christ

CHORUS

I can’t believe

The price you paid for me

What you did not owe

So that I could know you

How can it be

You chose someone like me

To declare your praise

For the glory of your name

Remember the great price Jesus paid for you, remember how faithful He is and how no mistake in your past, present or future will ever take away the love He has for you.
